"Hiram Cody at age nineteen came with his family to DuPage County from Vernon Center, New York. That was in 1843 and they settled in Bloomingdale. In 1847 Mr. Cody, having been elected Clerk of the County Commissioners, moved to Naperville, the county seat. While holding that office, he studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was a practicing attorney in Naperville when he was elected one of the first trustees of the village. In 1861 he was elected County Judge, and in 1874 became Judge of the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Illinois. Shortly after he began to practice law in Chicago, in 1879, he moved to that city."Photograph and article from "A View of Historic Naperville," from The Sky-Lines, articles by Genevieve Towsley, published in the Naperville Sun Newspaper. My postscript:I know this family well! Members of the Cody family are mentioned numerous times in the diaries of Guy Ellis Sabin. The Cody children were Minnie, Hiram, Jr, Rose Marie, Arthur and Hope, the last four being graduates of North Western College. Rose Cody gave the Valedictorian address at her commencement in 1875, when it was very progressive for a co-educational college even to exist!
Guy Sabin's first crush (a big one!) was on Miss Rose M. Cody. In the early recollections of Mary Colt Sabin, she mentions that Himie (Hiram, Jr) Cody walked her home from a Social, with brother Guy following behind. When Minnie Cody sought her first position at North Western College, Albert S. Sabin (my great-great grandfather) gave her a reference.
If anyone has additional information about Judge Cody or his family, please contact Pat Sabin.
