Built in 1908,  on May 16, 1938, the Terminal Hotel was the site of the worst fire in Atlanta history until that time.   Shortly after 3:00 a.m. fire swept through the hotel, killing thrity-four men, women and children.  A number of the victims were railroad men, scheduled to go out on the morning train.
