Introduction
For  many years Columbus has existed for me only in the fondest memories of my childhood.  On June 16, 2000, my sister and I revisited Columbus and felt a real connection to the place that once was home.

Most of the postcards shown here are in my collection.  Thanks to Sarah Cogan for contributing scanned images of some of her vintage Columbus postcards!

GREETINGS FROM COLUMBUS, GEORGIA

The first cards in this vintage postcard collection are from a postcard folder, not postally used but copyright 1914 by J. L. White.   The interior cover gives quite a recommendation:

"Because of climatic and other reasons, the United States Government located its great Infantry School, Fort Benning, within eight miles of Columbus.

"The U.S. Weather Bureau says, 'The annual mean temperature of Columbus is 65.4 degrees.  The winter mean is 48.8 degrees.  This is so mild that Columbus should be one of the finest winter resorts in the South.'

"Columbus is situated on a navigable waterway (The Chattahoochee- Apalachicola system) which traverses the rich Chattahoochee Valley and empties into the Gulf through the ports of Apalachicola and Panama City, Florida.

"The falls of the Chattahoochee above Columbus have been utilized for the development of approximately one hundred thousand horse power.

"Seven rail lines of three great systems converge at Columbus, furnishing dependable transportation.

"Good roads penetrate nearby fields of raw material production.  Within a radius of three miles of the center of Columbus, Georgia (including Phenix and Girard, Alabama, immediately across the Chattahoochee river which divides the States of Georgia and Alabama) there is a population of 65,000.

"The third largest textile center of the South, with approximately one half million active spindles, Columbus has a background of three quarters of a century of success in the manufacture of cotton goods.

"Five strong banks provide favorable financial connections.

"Taxes are just and reasonable:  five year exemption to new industries.

"A friendly and hospitable people will welcome you.

        "Come to Columbus."

 Enjoy!
